The Climakers have issued an enhanced and updated version of the “Guidelines for Policy Makers”. These Guidelines offer farmer-driven, science-based and result-oriented solutions to National Governments to successfully implement the Paris Agreement in Agriculture.

On the occasion of Agriculture Day at this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, The Climakers, led by the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), have issued an enhanced and updated version of the “Guidelines for Policy Makers“.

In these Guidelines, The Climakers outline three interrelated principles to help inform the national and global decision-making process to address climate change in agriculture:

  • Governments have the opportunity to improve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) thanks to these recommendations offered by the world farmers, based on their practical solutions validated by science according to a solid science-based approach.
  • Integrating a farmer-driven approach in decision-making processes is important to better understand farmers’ priorities and challenges related to adaptation and mitigation actions.
  • A multi-stakeholder perspective needs to be applied to actions on the ground and at the national level, putting the farmers at the heart of it.

Based on these principles, the Guidelines offer national Governments solutions to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement at the national level, based on farmers’ needs, expectations and best practices already implemented by producers, identified and gathered within The Climakers Initiative.

“Agriculture is the only sector that can mitigate and adapt to climate change. It can also go beyond mitigation by generating a positive impact on nature,” said Arianna Giuliodori, Secretary General of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), speaking to the microphones of Ahram Online. “We are here to ask the parties to firmly recognise agriculture in the climate negotiations and the implementation of the Paris agreement. […] We are happy to share here in the COP27 a set of guidelines and examples of best practices that the farmers propose.”
